In brief

What works, what to weigh

+

Strengths

5 reasons to book
  • Walking distance to metro and the Bund — North Sichuan Rd station is a 5-minute walk, and the Bund is reachable on foot, making it an easy base for exploring.
  • Spacious, clean rooms with useful extras — Rooms come with air conditioning, a fridge, an electric kettle, and a flat-screen TV. Guests repeatedly note the size and cleanliness.
  • Comfortable beds and friendly staff — The king-size beds earn praise for sleep quality, and the reception and housekeeping staff are described as pleasant and helpful.
  • Live like a local on a food street — Zhapu Lu is a bustling market street with fruit sellers, snack stalls, and the well-known Wujing Lu food street nearby, offering a genuine local experience.
  • Good value for the price — Given the location, room size, and included breakfast, several guests feel the rate is reasonable for a 4-star in central Shanghai.

Worth weighing

5 to weigh
  • A noisy, dirty street outside — Zhapu Lu is lively but can be smelly and dirty, with street vendors and heavy foot traffic—some guests find it unpleasant.
  • Not right on the Bund — The hotel is in Hongkou, about a 20-30 minute walk to the Bund itself. Some may prefer to be closer to the waterfront.
  • Reviews are mixed on the area — While many like the local feel, the district's condition and the lack of English menus in nearby restaurants can be a drawback for some.
  • In-room internet may need a lead — Free Wi-Fi is listed, but at least one guest mentions having to request a connection lead for their room.
  • Bar and restaurant service can be inconsistent — The on-site bar is rarely open, and while the restaurant has fans, it may not always be available.

“The hotel's location was the standout, making it easy to get around. Rooms were spacious and clean, with a fridge handy for snacks. The included breakfast added convenience.”

“The big bed gave me the best sleep I've had in a while, and the free Wi-Fi was a bonus.”

“Location-wise, it's a 5-minute walk from North Sichuan Rd metro and just two stops from East Nanjing Rd. Zhapu Lu is a bustling street full of shops, restaurants (mostly Chinese menus), and street vendors, which makes it lively but also dirty and smelly for my taste. Wujing Lu nearby is famous for street food, from noodles to scorpions. Inside, it feels like a luxury 4-star hotel with a cosy reception and a bar that's rarely open. When it is, they serve decent coffee, tea, and excellent croissants (they've mastered the French version) plus cakes at 5-10 yuan. The deluxe rooms on the 9th floor were big, clean, with very comfortable beds and views, plus tea/coffee facilities and TV. No complaints.”

“Convenient Hongkou location, within walking distance of the metro. Rooms tidy and clean with comfy beds and spacious bathrooms. Staff, especially housekeeping, are pleasant. Plenty of restaurants nearby.”

“The location is poor—the hotel sits on a dirty street.”
